“Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.” – John 12:44-47
I don’t know about you, but right now it seems that while we are uncertain of what is to come, we are also seeing things change, almost on a daily basis! We are being inundated with messages of fear, and yet, we are seeing such an outpouring of love and care for one another, and for those that are working in our best interests. I, and I am sure you, are seeing videos, posts or articles or hearing stories that highlight the very best in our society and in our community. This is indeed heartwarming and it goes along way to mitigating our anxiousness…if we are paying attention to these good news stories.
I want us to pay attention to those…to listen to good news. And there is no better “Good News” than the message of Christ and his triumph in our lives. This week is Palm Sunday and it marks the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem as we enter Holy Week. It is a week of highs and lows, triumphs and tragedies, uncertainty and joy. It is, essentially, what we are living through right now.
Hear the Good News… “in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” This is what John tells us about Jesus in the opening chapter of his gospel, his good news, and it is this that Jesus is reiterating in His words to his disciples that I quote above. Jesus IS the light of the world, the light of all people and he can and should be our light in these dark times. Because the darkness cannot overcome Him, the darkness cannot defeat Him, even the darkness of death.
I invite you this week to face the light. Take time to get out in the sunshine (being careful to observe social distancing, of course). Pay attention to the good news stories in our days. See the light in each other as we reach out with care for our neighbours, friends and family via email, text and especially on the phone. Embrace the light of Christ, in prayer and meditation on His words in the Gospel of John.
Don’t forget! We are live-streaming our Sunday morning message on Facebook and then it will be available on our website later that day. Won’t you share this with your friends and family? This is the good news of encouragement and support you can share at this time. I will also have a copy of my message available for any who would wish to read it instead.
And know, that we are facing these difficult times TOGETHER! I am here for you, to listen, anytime. Call me, text me, email me, I’m always available for you.
Be safe, be well, peace…
